Patrick E. Deady

For over twenty-five years, Pat was responsible for supervising the labor and employment, health care, government fraud, commercial and white-collar defense litigation at Hogan Marren Babbo & Rose, Ltd., in Chicago. He has conducted jury and bench trials in federal and state courts and argued before the United States Courts of Appeals and the Illinois Appellate Courts in a wide range of civil and criminal cases.

Pat has represented hospital and health system clients in federal false claim act and whistleblower litigation, in antitrust investigations, and in Medicare, Medicaid and insurance reimbursement disputes. In 2004, Pat led a litigation team representing Advocate Healthcare in connection with a $250 million antitrust claim brought by United Healthcare. That case was one of first successful defenses of a group of clinically integrated providers negotiating jointly with health insurers. In other commercial litigation, Pat has defended companies and individuals in cases involving civil RICO violations, sexual discrimination, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, Illinois trades secrets violations and in insurance coverage disputes.

In his criminal practice, Pat has handled cases involving bribery, extortion, public corruption, civil rights conspiracy, securities and commodity fraud, tax evasion, criminal RICO violations and domestic terrorism. Pat continues to represent organizations and individuals in grand jury and regulatory investigations, administrative proceedings, and trials arising out of inquiries into public corruption, financial misconduct and government fraud. He regularly represents organizations and individuals in investigations conducted by the offices of the inspector generals of federal and state agencies and the City of Chicago. Pat defended at trial and on appeal one of several Chicago City Hall employees charged in a patronage hiring fraud scheme, Sorich v. United States, 555 U.S. 1204 (2009).

Pat has also represented labor organizations and pension and benefit funds in matters involving sexual harassment in the workplace, trade jurisdiction and collective bargaining disputes, arbitrations, ERISA collection litigation and alter ego actions and in unfair labor practice charges and election petitions filed before the National Labor Relations Board and Illinois State Labor Board. Pat was lead attorney in a successful class-action lawsuit brought by employees of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago challenging the District’s elimination of $38 million in deferred compensation. Gaweda v. MWRD, 2010 CH 52264 (Cook Cty.). More recently, Pat successfully defended several former union officers of a Teamsters local union charged with breach of fiduciary duty, a case seeking disgorgement of more than $1.3 million of the former officers’ salaries. Kouba v. Flynn, Case No. 15 C 11211 (March 27, 2019, N.D. Ill.).

Pat also serves as the Village Attorney for the Village of Hillside, Illinois, consulting with the President, Village Trustees and Village staff on all municipal issues. He also represents the Village and other units of local government in litigation, administrative proceedings, and inspector general investigations. Pat has also served as Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois.
